SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Brian Kelly has met his new team and
talked with reporters. He is now in charge of the Notre Dame
football program. At his first news conference, the former
University of Cincinnati coach says the Irish job is a dream come
true.
Kelly says he has just one goal, a national championship. The
Irish haven’t won a national title in 21 years and the 48-year-old
Kelly admits there are “challenges” ahead. Notre Dame has gone
16-and-21 the last three seasons, a record that helped get Charlie
Weis fired.
Kelly wouldn’t say how far away he thinks his new team is from
that level, saying where the team now isn’t important.
He gets a five-year contract.
The Irish are losing two of its best offensive players.
Quarterback Jimmy Clausen and his favorite receiver, Golden Tate,
said this week they are heading to the NFL draft.
